Full-time faculty are expected to participate fully in departmental activities and college governance and hold regular office hours.

Starting salary range: $58,382.79 – $92,764.61 annually.

Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary computation as determined by placement on the regular salary schedule of the College. A maximum of step 8 at the appropriate salary grade will be awarded to new faculty. Estimated value of these employer-paid benefits is approximately $28,126 annually. All full-time faculty are enrolled in CalSTRS (California State Teachers Retirement System).

Primary Function

The Assistant Professor, Nursing (Two Positions) will be primarily responsible for teaching a variety of courses in the discipline of nursing. Specifically, these courses include lecture, clinical instruction, and campus lab instruction. Clinical instruction may be assigned to various times of the day on any day of the week (Monday – Sunday), and the assignment may be changed at any time. The two current openings are for Maternal Health/Obstetrics nursing and Medical-Surgical nursing.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet all of the qualifications listed under a) through d):
a) A Master’s degree in nursing.
b) Current license or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
c) One year of professional experience providing direct patient care as a bedside RN within the past five years in Maternal Health/Obstetric or Medical-Surgical nursing (direct patient care experience as a registered nurse, which includes registered nurse-level clinical teaching experience, in the content/clinical area).
d) Eligible for approval as a Maternal Health/Obstetric or Medical-Surgical and Geriatrics instructor by the California State Board of Nursing.

Only coursework completed at, and degrees awarded by, accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered as satisfying the minimum qualifications. Coursework and degrees that are completed outside of the United States are required to have transcripts evaluated (evaluation to U.S. equivalency and a course by course analysis) by an appropriate U.S. credentials evaluation service. NOTE: For professional experience, a “year” is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 10 months.

Preferred Qualifications

3. Experience working with the geriatric population.
4. Experience working in a nursing simulation lab or simulation experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the teaching responsibilities, other duties include maintaining regular office hours, developing curriculum, program review and planning, developing and assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in department activities and college governance. Related duties include the following:

1. Responsible for providing theory and clinical instruction for all levels of Maternal Health/Obstetric or Medical-Surgical nursing; supervise, counsel, and evaluate students; prepare course outlines, assignments, and examinations.
2. Participate fully as a member on Nursing Education Department committees, departmental activities, and College governance.
3. Hold regular office hours and participate in recruitment, community outreach, and retention of students.
4. Act as a liaison between the College, the students, and the agencies utilized for clinical experience.
5. Teach assigned courses and develop and supervise simulations in a manner consistent with the department’s standards and with the content cited in the approved curriculum guides; follow the instructional policies as outlined in both the College and the Nursing Education Department Faculty Manual.
6. Assist in the coordination of instruction among part-time faculty in the simulation lab.
7. Remain current in the subject matter areas and in the techniques of effective instruction through recent clinical experience and professional development.
8. Maintain current California registered nursing licensure and CPR certification.
9. Comply with clinical requirements for immunizations and orientations determined appropriate by clinical agencies.
